2021 Annual Holiday Campaign with Giving Tuesday, November 30!
Tuesday, November 30, 2021 – Monday, January 10, 2022
While the Holiday Season can be a wonderful time of year for many, it can be a very challenging time for those with epilepsy and seizures. The added intricacies of the current COVID-19 pandemic only add further discomfort for these kind individuals. Now, more than ever, we at the EFMNY are asking you to please help us to continue to make a true difference in their lives. A generous gift to The EFMNY 2021 Annual Holiday Campaign is urgently needed now, to allow us to meaningfully assist them, and their families and friends, as they turn to us for support. The EFMNY has helped to change lives since 1967. As New York City’s only specialized social service organization dedicated to serving those with epilepsy, we furnish a range of counseling, educational, vocational, and social work services that provide genuine assistance and real hope. This year we have again meaningfully assisted thousands and thousands of persons. Yet there is much more remaining to do, and never more so than now, due to COVID-19, if we had the additional funds to do so. Our government funding covers a good portion of our costs, but not nearly enough. This means that public support is more essential than ever. Your thoughtful gift allows more deserving persons to receive help, hope, and awareness about living with epilepsy. It is your caring private contribution that permits us to continue to be of service. With our deepest gratitude and appreciation, we wish you and yours a Healthy and Happy Holiday Season!National Epilepsy Awareness Month
November 2021
November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month
The month of November is when we celebrate National Epilepsy Awareness Month. During this month, the Epilepsy Foundation of America and its national regional affiliates, such as the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York (EFMNY), come together to provide information about prevention, treatment, research, and resources to fight epilepsy, and most importantly, to assist in the ongoing search for a cure. For every four persons who pass away from breast cancer, five persons pass away from epilepsy. And one in twenty-six persons will develop epilepsy in his/her lifetime. Epilepsy is a central nervous system disorder characterized by abnormal brain activity, causing seizures and/or periods of uncommon behavior, sensations, and often a loss of awareness. Epilepsy can occur in anyone, regardless of age, sex, race, and ethnic tradition. Sadly, epilepsy has been misunderstood for centuries, creating a profound astigmatism. When the brain’s highly active electrical signals fail, the affected individual experiences a seizure. This then provokes a derangement in normal brain activity with a related short-lived nerve cells communication problem. Most seizures can last from a few seconds to a few minutes, and a person can be disoriented or drowsy afterward. Seizure symptoms are varied, from one person to an0ther. One individual even might not recall a seizure and what occurred just before it, while another individual might be very alert after a seizure. The EFMNY mission is to provide epilepsy awareness, advocacy, and vital services/supports, not only to individuals and families affected by epilepsy but also to raise awareness within and beyond our community. Together, we can make a true difference, for those with epilepsy and seizures and their families in the NYC community. The Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York (EFMNY) is leveraging its community’s strength to reduce the fear surrounding epilepsy and bring hope to those facing challenges. Through a social media campaign called #RemoveTheFilter, the EFMNY is asking everyone to “remove the filter” and make a difference for the more than 215,200 people in New York State with epilepsy. A few ways you can #RemoveTheFilter: Share your epilepsy journey to inspire action Get Seizure First Aid Ready to help save a life Become an Epilepsy Awareness Ambassador to raise awareness Join the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York’s efforts at efmny.org#NEAM2021 #RemoveTheFilter

Please join the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York as we celebrate our 54th year of providing vital services and supports to the NYC epilepsy community, and as we recognize this years Distinguished Service Honoree Fred A. Lado, MD, PhD, who is the Director of Epilepsy for the Northwell Health Central and Eastern Regions. Over many years now, the EFMNY has had the good fortune to have Fred’s proactive presence on its Board of Directors, and as Vice Chair on its highly regarded Professional Advisory Board. His experienced and timely professional views and perspective are greatly valued by his colleagues. As well, whenever the EFMNY has a significant local event or activity, Fred is unfailingly there, giving 110% of himself and his medical center, fully backing our shared essential mission of service to those with epilepsy and seizures and their families in the NYC community. Fred earned his MD and PhD degrees from the NYU School of Medicine, having done his thesis on the use of magnetoencephalography (MEG) to examine human electrical brain activity. He completed his neurology residency at York Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center, and his fellowship training at Montefiore Hospital Medical Center, where he remained on the faculty for 18 years prior to joining Northwell Health in 2017. Presently, at Northwell Health, Fred leads a multi-disciplinary Team of neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, and neuropsychology clinicians, epilepsy trained nurses, EEG technologists, a nurse practitioner, and a social worker, with the common professional focus on providing every individual the best care possible. Along with his important roles on the EFMNY Boards, Fred has also served in numerous national leadership positions, with the American Epilepsy Society (AES), the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), and the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC). It is indeed a tremendous honor for the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York to recognize Fred this year. Please join the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York’s 2017 Annual Into The Light Holiday Campaign to build our community, raise epilepsy awareness and bring epilepsy “Into the Light.” If you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with epilepsy you know how hard that diagnosis can be. Why me or my child? How do I tell my friends? What do I do now? Our “Into The Light” campaign is designed to let persons know there are treatments to access, resources to guide them and a community to support them. These programs are free of charge, open to all, and help to raise epilepsy awareness, provide education within and beyond our community, and empower individuals and families affected by epilepsy and seizure disorder. Please consider the experience of the following Epilepsy NYC community members, all now serving as epilepsy awareness advocates.Happy Holidays to All!

6th Annual Into The Light Walk for Epilepsy Awareness
Sunday, September 24, 2017 South Street Seaport, NY
Join the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York as we celebrate epilepsy awareness and walk to bring epilepsy “Into The Light.†Once again this year our goal is to make this the largest and most successful annual epilepsy awareness event in our NYC community, and with your generous participation we will do just that! Walk to let the world know that this fourth most common neurological disease needs attention, advocacy and support! Last year the Walk united over 1000 persons, who showed their commitment to supporting one another and to making a true difference in the lives of those with epilepsy and seizures, and their families. We look forward to greeting all the returning Teams and Individuals and to meeting those of you who are attending for the first time. The special spirit of the persons who gather together to celebrate the cause of epilepsy makes this a truly special occasion for all participants. The historic South Street Seaport will welcome everyone once more with check-in at 9 AM, opening ceremonies at 10:30 AM and the Walk at 11 AM. But once the Walk is completed why not make a day of it in Lower Manhattan and enjoy yourself! “The Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York Annual Walk means so much to all of us who are affected one way or another by epilepsy in the lives of those whom we hold so dear. We look forward to being there in 2017, for the best Walk ever!†—Team Captain from the 2016 WalkClick to REGISTER or DONATE: EpilepsyIntoTheLight2017
